Blu-ray has a number of big studios and major hardware manufacturers backing it while HD DVD has only Universal, Paramount, and Warner from the movie studios (and the latter two are also releasing Blu-ray titles). Also, as the Blu-ray manufacturing process matures, prices will drop. But porn is big business, with Forbes estimating $14 billion in annual sale
s as of 2001, and if adult filmmakers throw their weight behind HD DVD and largely ignore Blu-ray, it will boost the fortunes of HD DVD. It's not going to be enough to tip the battle decisively one way or another, but it will mean a longer, more protracted battle between the two camps.

Founded in September 1922 as the Hotel Department in Cornell's School of Home Economics in the New York State College of Agriculture, the now-renowned hospitality think tank that is part of one of the finest Ivy League universities had a modest start. The program was the first of its kind anywhere. It began with only 21 students under the direction of a single professor, Howard B. Meek.
In 1927, Ellsworth M. Statler, a self-made millionaire who founded the largest hotel chain of his day, was persuaded to attend the second Hotel Ezra Cornell (HEC) weekend organized by the Hotel Department students. When he first arrived, Statler was skeptical about the school's program. He believed individuals interested in a hospitality career could be better served by on-the-job training than by the sort of formal schooling provided at Cornell. By the end of the weekend, however, his mind had changed. To the crowd gathered for the HEC banquet, he said, "I'm converted. Meek can have any damn thing he wants."
His speech was perhaps one of the most meaningful in the history of the school. Although Statler died in 1928, just eleven months after he attended HEC, he and his wife became the school's greatest benefactors through provisions in Statler's will, which included the establishment of the Statler Foundation. Over the years, the foundation has provided millions of dollars to the school for support of teaching, research, scholarships, and facilities.
During the 20 years following Statler's visit to Cornell, the Hotel Department established a standard for excellence in the hospitality industry, and it grew steadily. In 1948, the Statler Foundation contributed the funds to build the original Statler Hall, including Statler Inn, a fifty-room practice-management laboratory. The university established a full-fledged School of Hotel Administration two years later and in 1986 built the 150-room Statler Hotel and J. Willard Marriott Executive Education Center on the site of the original inn.

In the ruling, the judge said parents can protect their children through software filters and other less restrictive means that do not limit the rights of others to free speech.
"Perhaps we do the minors of this country harm if (free speech) protections, which they will with age inherit fully, are chipped away in the name of their protection," wrote Senior U.S. District Judge Lowell Reed Jr., who presided over a four-week trial last fall.
The law would have criminalized Web sites that allow children to access material deemed "harmful to minors" by "contemporary community standards." The sites would have been expected to require a credit card number or other proof of age. Penalties included a $50,000 fine and up to six months in prison.
Sexual health sites, the online magazine Salon.com and other Web sites backed by the American Civil Liberties Union challenged the law. They argued that the Child Online Protection Act was unconstitutionally vague and would have had a chilling effect on speech.

[link widoczny dla zalogowanych] Van Iveren was charged with criminal trespass while using a dangerous weapon, criminal damage to property while using a dangerous weapon and disorderly conduct while using a dangerous weapon, misdemeanors which carry a maximum total penalty of 33 months in jail.
"The fact that he was at least trying to do something good, that's at least good," Stieghorst said.
Neighbors agree.
"I would be happy if someone tried to save me," Kandy Kimball said. "I think he's a good guy. I feel bad for him."
"It's kind of nice that we live in a town where people don't just turn their back and look the other way," David Peterson said. "I don't think he should be charged with three crimes. I would like to see the courts work with him and give the guy a little break."
"It was a woman screaming," Van Iveren said of the Feb. 12 incident. "She was screaming for help."
He grabbed the sword, a family heirloom, bounded up the stairs to the other apartment, kicked in the door and confronted Stieghorst.
"I intended to hold it behind my back and knock. But I froze and instead, what happened happened," Van Iveren said. "Now I feel stupid. This really is nothing, nothing but a mistake."
Van Iveren said that he does not have a telephone, so he could not call police when he heard the calls for help. He said he barely knew Stieghorst.
"It had nothing to do with him," he said. "I didn't even know if he was there. It was the woman. I thought there was a woman."
"I walked in the front room and looked around. When I saw there was no woman, I left," he said. Van Iveren insisted that he never threatened the neighbor with the sword.
"I had the sword extended. But that was all," he said.
